Well, what is a Wildcard SSL/TLS certificate?

A Wildcard SSL/TLS certificate is a type of digital security certificate which secures not only the top-level domain (TLD) like yourdomain.com, but also secures all first-level subdomains like mail.yourdomain.com, ibank.yourdomain.com or whatever.yourdomain.com…

With a single one of our wildcard certificates, you can secure your top-level domain and an unlimited number of sub-domains!

But there are two classes of Wildcard certificates for you to choose from; Domain Validation and Organisation Validation.

Two classes of Wildcards? What’s the difference?

Domain Validation (DV) SSL/TLS certificates (and the wildcard variant of course), only require you to prove your control over that domain, hence the name “Domain Validation.” Once this is done, the certificate is issued within 5 minutes and you can install it to secure your site and subdomains.

DV certificates are relatively fast, easy and cheap to get. Sadly that’s also what makes them ~~unsafe~~ for corporate use. In a world of ever-rising cybersecurity problems, you only want to use DV certificates on personal sites/domains.

So for businesses and other corporate organisations (both private and public sector), it is recommended to use Organisation Validation (OV) certificates, because the digital certificates will carry basic information about the Organisation, such as the registered name and department. This shows the company was vetted or verified by the Certificate Authority (CA) before issuing the certificate. OV Certificates are consequently more trusted in the global business community.

In fact, they’re the minimum recommended for all sizes of organisations, whether profit-making or not, government or private. They’re also mandated (as a minimum) for compliance in some highly regulated sectors, such as PCI/DSS.
